Methodology

Sleep debt is calculated as (your nightly target × 7) minus your total actual sleep across the 7-night window, converted to graded impact bands. The debt-response model follows Van Dongen, H.P.A. et al. (2003) "The cumulative cost of additional wakefulness," Sleep 26(2):117–126, which quantified the dose-response relationship between sleep restriction and cognitive performance, and Pilcher, J.J. & Huffcutt, A.I. (1996) "Effects of sleep deprivation on performance," Sleep 19(4):318–326.

Understanding sleep debt

What is sleep debt?

Sleep debt is the cumulative difference between the sleep you need and the sleep you actually get. Research suggests the body keeps a running "account" of sleep deprivation — getting 6 hours when you need 8 creates 2 hours of debt that day, which compounds across the week.

Can you recover sleep debt on weekends?

Partial recovery is possible with catch-up sleep, but research suggests it takes longer than the debt itself. Consistent short sleep is harder to recover from than occasional poor nights. The most effective approach is maintaining consistent sleep duration throughout the week.

How does sleep affect energy and focus?

Sleep deprivation affects cognitive function, mood regulation, metabolism, and immune response. Even moderate debt — 1–2 hours per night — can meaningfully impair reaction time, decision-making, and emotional regulation over days. Many people underestimate how impaired they are because fatigue reduces self-awareness.

What should I do with this information?

This tool is educational — it helps you visualise patterns. If you consistently accumulate sleep debt or experience significant sleep difficulty, speak with a healthcare professional. Sleep disorders are common and treatable.
